Ethics in Applied Social Research in Reproductive Health (July 2008)

From July 7th to 11th, 2008, a five day workshop on ethical issues in applied social science research in reproductive health was organised at the Xavier Institute of Social Service, Ranchi.

The focus of the training was on developing skills for moral reasoning and ethical analysis. The emphasis was on applied research both in the presentations by facilitators and in the case studies that were used for discussion. The faculty included Dr Richard Cash, Harvard School of Public Health, Dr Amar Jesani and Neha Madhiwalla, Centre for Studies in Ethics and Rights (a centre of the Anusandhan Trust), Dr. Mala Ramnathan, Achutha Menon Centre of Health Services Studies, Gracy Fernandes, Sangath, and Dr. Anant Kumar, Xavier Institute of Social Service.

Participants included development workers, social scientists, social researchers and medical professionals.


Teaching medical ethics in undergraduate medical curriculum (August 2008)

This workshop was held at the behest of the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, in collaboration with the FIAMC Bioethics Centre on 30th and 31st of August, 2008.

The focus of the workshop was to acquaint medical college teachers with the basic concepts in bioethics and also impart some basic training on teaching medical ethics to undergraduate medical students. The workshop dealt with the most commonly experienced ethical problems faced in medical practice. The sessions included patient-provider communication, privacy and confidentiality, truth-telling and breaking bad news, professional ethics, dealing with difficult patients and difficult situations, rationing in healthcare practice, gender, women’s health and ethics and teaching methods in medical ethics.

The faculty included Dr. Amar Jesani, Dr Walter Vaz (K.E.M Hospital), Dr. Neelima Kshirsagar (MUHS), Dr. Sanjay Dolas (Bhabha Hospital), Dr. Kamakshi Bhate (K.E.M Hospital) and Dr. L.J.de Souza (Shanti Avedna Centre). The workshop was facilitated by Jagadeesh Narayana Reddy (Vydehi Institute, Bangalore) and Neha Madhiwalla.

This workshop was attended by medical college teachers from various parts of Maharashtra, including various disciplines like forensic medicine, PSM, gynecology, medicine, surgery, pediatrics, etc.


Inhouse trainings

In addition to these workshops, two in-house trainings were organised by the CSER in 2008.

In collaboration with the CEHAT, a 14 day training on data analysis and writing was organised for the researchers of CEHAT and CSER. This was conducted by Prof Ramchandran, formerly, Head of Dept of Research Methodology at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

An academic writing workshop was organised by Padma Prakash for the staff of CEHAT, CSER and SNEHA as well as some interns.
